Tuesday, June 19th _________________________ Toluca Lake Elementary student wins Vecmobile Art Contest!
The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control Department offers free education programs to schools. Their goal is to provide education to help prevent the spread of dangerous diseases such as West Nile Virus & encephalitis, carried by dangerous vectors. To accomplish this task, the Vector Control Dept. sends an educational trailer, the Vecmobile to schools to provide hands-on education. Fifth grade students learn about the life cycle of a mosquito, its anatomy, how diseases are spread, and strategies to control the spread of vectors. Students conduct an experiment on the Vecmobile and each receive an activity book and certificate from the program. A few months ago, the Vecmobile made its annual visit to the Toluca Lake Elementary School. At the conclusion of their visit, they offered students the opportunity to participate in an art contest creating posters to educate the public about vector control. One of Toluca Lake’s fifth grade students, Jennifer Castro, won the grand prize for her drawing! Her poster will be posted upon over 40 different buses in the city. In addition, she will receive a $100 savings bond towards her education, and her class will receive a pizza party on June 4! Jennifer’s teacher, Mr. Dennis Hagen-Smith, commented, “I’m very proud of Jennifer’s hard work and creativity!” [press release] [web release]

Toluca Lake Students win a trip to Johnson Space Center in Houston
NASA Student Science Symposium
Two Toluca Lake Elementary Students win a trip to the Student Science Symposium at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas! [Only 10 elementary schools from the entire United States were chosen - Toluca Lake was one of them and the only elementary school from California!]
Toluca Lake Elementary School became a part of the NASA Explorer School (NES) program this year. As a NES school, Toluca Lake Elementary is able to make use of a plethora of fine lessons provided by scientists, engineers, and educators from NASA and JPL. One of these lessons involved designing a prototype “lunar plant chamber” enabling astronauts to grow food on the surface of the moon.
Students worked in groups of two to create their design and build their prototypes. Each model had to provide ways for the astronauts to generate electricity, recycle water, and have a housing unit connected to the plant chamber. The top two student groups sent power point presentations of their work to NASA. One of these teams has been selected as the only elementary school in California to go to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas to present their project at the Student Science Symposium. Fifth grade students, Caitline Molina and Ali Freas will be accompanying their teacher, Dennis Hagen-Smith, to Houston in early May. “I am very proud of the hard work the students did on this challenging project,” commented Hagen-Smith.

Principal Message - Ms. Carol Reo-Bove
Dear Toluca Lake Parents and Families,
The season of spring brings many exciting events to Toluca Lake Elementary School. We will have Open House on Tuesday, April 24th from 5:00 to 6:30. To start the evening we will meet in the Auditorium at 5:00 to preview an outstanding power point that shows all the activities provided for your students here at Toluca Lake. At 5:30, parents will begin visiting the classrooms and other activities. The PTA and Parent Center continue to support our school with many plans and activities. They will be providing the Twist Burger Truck on campus so that you don’t need to prepare dinner that evening. The PTA will also be providing door prizes.
Starting on April 23rd, we will have our annual Scholastic Book Fair. Educational children’s books will be on sale in the parent center. The children will be taking a preview of the books a couple days before the sale begins. The Book Fair will also be open during open house so that you could purchase anything that your child found interesting during the preview. Otherwise, the Fair will continue for the rest of the week until April 27h
Another very important activity for the month of April is our annual Emergency Preparedness Drill. In conjunction with LAUSD we will hold an emergency drill in order to prepare the children for any type of disaster. It is also very important to talk with your child about what to do at home and where the family would be able to contact each other in case of an emergency. Please be sure that all contact information is updated so that we always are able to get in touch with you. We still have found that some phone numbers are outdated and hope that you will help us by being sure that the latest phone number is on file in the office.
On April 28th we will celebrate School Beautification Day. Starting at 9:00am, parents, teachers and students will be here on campus weeding, raking, mopping and in general “Spring Cleaning” our school. If you are free on Saturday morning of the 28th, please join us for this wonderful event. Lunch is being sponsored by Togo’s Sandwiches. It will be a great way to share a morning with your child at school!
In conjunction with the idea of Family Time together we have attached our Parent Information on “Student Success”. Remember to put it on your fridge to remind yourself of the steps you can take to make the most of “Time With Your Child”.
REMINDERS & UPCOMING EVENTS
Please read our Marquis Sign at the front of the school for important dates, school closings and other school activities.
All students should wear their Toluca Lake Tee on Fridays. The students are very excited to show their school spirit. These Tee shirts are also very good to wear when your child is on a school sponsored field trip.
All gates close at 7:50 every morning. We still have a few stragglers. If you know that your child is late, please do not drop them off at the Valet drop off after 7:50 when the program is closing. The student must go to the main office for a late slip.
